GERMAN DIOCESE: 18 September, 2025 Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany leads the cathedral feast of the Church of Righteous Elizabeth
The Russian Orthodox Church of Righteous Elizabeth in Neroberg, Wiesbaden, in Germany, was built between 1847 and 1855 at the initiative of Duke Adolf of Nassau in memory of his wife, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna; the church, parish house, and Russian cemetery have become important testaments to the presence of Orthodox Christianity and Russian culture in Wiesbaden.
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, the Divine Liturgy on the occasion of the church’s feast day was led by His Eminence Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. He was assisted by his Vicar Bishop Job of Stuttgart and 13 priests in the presence of a large gathering of worshipers.
The sermon was delivered by Bishop Job. He pointed out that the Righteous Zachariah and Elizabeth established a habit of silence in their family, which made room for God; in this, they serve as an example for each of us. This example was also followed by the founders and builders of the church, who likewise created a place for the presence of God. The builders of the new parish house have also emulated this practice.
After the service, the new parish house was consecrated, uniquely built into the hill behind the historic rectory and next to the Russian cemetery. The construction was carried out under the supervision of Subdeacon Mikhail Vladimirovich Gorachek, the warden of the Frankfurt parish, with the selfless participation of many helpers and donors. However, there are still unpaid bills, and further donations are needed.
This place holds special significance for the German Diocese not only because it houses a historic Russian cemetery and church but also because it is where the current Archbishop of Berlin and Germany, Mark, began his monastic and priestly journey. Therefore, the diocesan administration urges everyone who has the opportunity to contribute to the final completion of the construction.
