On the Eve of the Day of National Unity, a Memorial for His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II Will be Held at San Francisco’s Cathedral of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco and Western America of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, the large parish hall of the Cathedral of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” will host a memorial for the late Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia on Thursday, November 3, 2011, the eve of the feast day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and Russia’s Day of National Unity. Thanks to the prayers, determination and profound faith of Patriarch Alexy and Metropolitan Laurus of blessed memory, the division within the Local Russian Orthodox Church was overcome.

The program will include an exhibition of photographs by Mikhail Moiseev of Moscow devoted to church life in Russia and a showing of a Russian-language film, The Path of a Patriarch. Afterwards, Mr Moiseev, the former Deputy Director of the Press Service of the Moscow Patriarchate, will then share his memories of Patriarch Alexy. A new recording from the series Songs of the Russian Diaspora will also be played. The event will open at 6:30 am, and the film will be shown at 7 pm. There is no admission fee.
