News From the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America
On Saturday, July 2, 2011, the Organization of Russian Orthodox Scouts opens a summer camp for orthodox youth. Located an hour and a half from Chicago in a rural area in the northern corner of Illinois, the camp offers our youth a change to study the Law of God, Russian culture and history and introduces them to scouting skills. The camp session includes sports, handicrafts, swimming and campfires. This summer's session is approaching quickly (July 2-30). More registration information and applications can be found on the camp website: www.orprcamp.org
At a parish council meeting held on May 21st, it was decided to undertake some renovation work in Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral in Des Plaines, IL. Due to wear in the wood floors and because a flooring specialist has offered to volunteer his labor, the parish council approved the work which will begin on July 11. As the new finish will use a longer lasting oil-based lacquer which needs much longer to dry and air out, the work is expected to take 2 weeks. The period of time between July 10 and July 31 was chosen as this will minimize interference with the schedule of divine services. The candle stand and part of the altar side room will also be rebuilt as part of the planned renovation. During the renovations, all services will take place in the parish hall. For this reason, we ask anyone who is able to stay after the Divine Liturgy on July 10th to help with moving all of the items in the church over to the parish hall.
