DIOCESE OF WESTERN EUROPE: May 21, 2010
Clergymen of the Russian Church Abroad Take Part in an Orthodox Matins Service Before the Shroud of Turin

In the late evening of May 17, 2010,  an Orthodox matins service was held before the Shroud of the Savior at Turin Cathedral in Italy, headed by His Eminence Metropolitan Ilarion of Volokolamsk, President of the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Joining His Eminence were six hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate, and numerous priests and deacons from Western Europe. Representing the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in the solemn ceremony were His Grace Bishop Michael of Geneva and Western Europe; Protopriest Pavel Tsvetkoff, Senior Priest of Holy Cross Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland; and Priest Maxime Massalitine, Rector of Archangel Michael Church in Cannes, France.

Over 800 Orthodox Christians gathered from throughout Europe for the service before the Shroud of Turin, which was presented for veneration for the first time in ten years.

After the matins service, the pilgrims proceeded to the Russian Orthodox Parish of St Maxim of Turin, where a night-time Divine Liturgy was celebrated, at which over 500 faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church partook of the Holy Gifts of Christ.
