The Miracle-working Akhtyrka Icon of the Mother of God in New Zealand

Russian Orthodox faithful have been widely scattered throughout the world. Thousands and thousands of miles separate them from Mother Russia. But far from their homeland, despite distances and time, Russians preserve the holy faith of Orthodoxy, remaining loyal children of Christ’s Church. The Lord does not abandon those who believe in Him and trust in Him.

In New Zealand, the “edge of the world,” Russians have benefited from the visit of the Miracle-working Icon of the Mother of God of Akhtyrka.

The Icon was brought to Oakland by Protopriest Michael Boikov of Sydney. It was placed in the center of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, and over the course of three days (22-24 March), all who wished were able to venerate the holy Icon, pray to the Mother of God for help, consolation and hope.

On Saturday, 22 March, after divine liturgy, Fr. Michael, together with the Serbian priest Fr. Sasha, performed the service of supplication with the blessing of the waters before the Akhtyrka Icon. As per tradition, during the glorification of the Most-Pure Virgin Mary, the Icon was bathed in water. A great mystery occurred before our very eyes—plain water was poured over the Icon, and became sanctified!

The entire service was suffused with a special, pious mood. After the service, parishioners were able to collect holy water for their homes, to partake with prayer of the healing, ever-fresh water in difficult times.

On Monday, Fr. Michael was obliged to return to Sydney. It saddened us to part with the holy Icon. But the hearts of the faithful will forever retain the memory of the blessed visit of the Queen of Heaven, and with Her, love, faith and hope. Most-Holy Mother of God, save us!
